earBuzz.com Review:
Isabelle Lee Senger is one of the present and future's fine violin/fiddle players. She has assembled here what most wouldn't - a recital that offers to everyone a chance to see what the student had done with her years studying her craft of music. The collection, Fiddle Recital, offers six beautiful compositions that showcase the sincerity and emotion that comes across in her instrument and playing. Highlights include the Mark O'Connor composition, Fiddle Concerto #1 - the piece flows from a dark minor breath with Lee, herself, seeming to float through the notes with a heavy heart and then up to joyful passages which allow Lee to exhibit her dexterity, speed, and legato. An ensemble piece, Chief Sitting In the Rain, is another gorgeous example of Lee's abilities, accompanied here by a small but potent section. Brave Wolfe, track #4, is an exciting piece with a musical battle between the violin and a concert trumpet (maybe a flugal horn?) at the finish - beautiful. All but one of the tracks were recorded live on May 4th, 1998 at Shoeberg Hall at UCLA. The final track on the CD is a piece entitled At The Octoroon Balls, a Wynton Marsalis composition - of Marsalis, within the liner notes, Lee writes, ". .he helped me to let go of my inhibitions and just. . . play". If it took Marsalis to convey the key to the passion of artistic music and improvisation, then we are the better for it and look forward to Lee's next work.
